Flamboyant Tree - Some say the world's most colourful tree. For several weeks in
spring and summer it is covered with exuberant clusters of flame-red flowers. Royal
poinciana is a fast growing tree. Even the leaves are elegant, lacy and fern like.
Flamboyant Tree tolerates hard pruning and can easily be kept at a small size, and
even grown in the greenhouse or on a sunny windowsill.
For sub-tropical regions: Hardiness: USDA Zone 8-11 with minimum of 21 degrees
F. It is not frost-hardy, dies to the ground following frost or freezing
temperatures, but returns fine in warmer conditions (late spring) and flowers all
through summer and fall. It is winter deciduous, so water and fertilize sparingly in
winter.
Seeds: Propagation Method
One possibility is that propagation, by seed, while not at all difficult requires that
certain steps be taken to ensure success. The seeds have a very hard and
impermeable seed coat which inhibits the uptake of water, so simply sowing these will
generally result in a very low germination rate, possibly 5% or less. The way to
overcome this problem is to scratch the seed coats of each individual seed by rubbing
one side against medium grade sandpaper laid on a flat surface, for about 15 seconds.
Soak these scarified seeds overnight, and the ones where the process has been
sufficiently thorough will show signs of peeling of the seed coat. Plant these seeds
about 20mm deep directly into pots, a useful size pot would be about 12cm but if you
wish you can sow into larger pots and skip a re potting stage. The seeds will
germinate in about 4-6 days, with an extremely high success rate.
Another way is to place seeds in boiling water. After a couple of minutes add cold
water to drop the temperature to hot but not boiling. Let them soak for 24 hours.
Sow seeds in moist seeding mix covering with 3 times their thickness. Place in warm
location best on top of refrigerator. Germination occurs then in 4-6 days.
Seed pods are dark brown and can be up to 60 cm long and 5 cm wide; the individual
seeds, however, are small, weighing around 0.4 g on average.
